Quedar suspendido en el aire con la ayuda de un columpio combinando posturas que requieren gran esfuerzo físico con otras más propicias para la meditación es el último grito en los gimnasios de Estados Unidos, y ya ha cruzado el charco. Poco a poco el aeroyoga o yoga swing se está instalando en Europa, y en España lo ha hecho de la mano de Rafa Martínez, que imparte esta disciplina en Madrid Espacio Creativo.

El columpio protagonista de esta nueva modalidad de yoga tiene su origen como instrumento de rehabilitación. Está hecho con tela de paracaídas y cuenta con dos brazos y cada unos de ellos con tres estribos donde agarrarse. Inicialmente se utilizó para recuperar la movilidad de las extremidades tras un accidente o tratar enfermedades musculares como la fibromialgia, sin embargo ahora sus funciones son mucho más amplias y ha supuesto el nexo de unión entre el yoga y las artes circenses.
Desde el primer día quienes acuden a las clases de aeroyoga realizan posturas que, a simple vista, parecen dignas del Circo del Sol. Además de ganar elasticidad y agilidad, quienes lo practican aumentan la confianza en sí mismos y experimentan la sensación de volar, que predispone al buen humor y a tomar una actitud positiva ante la vida. No es necesaria ninguna experiencia previa en acrobacias antes de ponerse manos a la obra, aunque muchas veces las posiciones más sencillas son las más beneficiosas para cuerpo y mente.
Beneficios saludables
Las posturas boca abajo suelen ser las primeras que prueba el alumno y favorecen el drenaje, que evita la retención de líquidos, a la vez que producen un efecto de sedación, ya que propician la producción de endorfinas y serotonina, hormonas que liberan la mente de depresión y preocupaciones ayudando a relativizar los problemas.

Las edades de los alumnos de Espacio Creativo están comprendidas entre los 4 y los 80 años, por lo que Rafa y su compañera Natalia programan los ejercicios de cada clase dependiendo de los asistentes. Una serie de diferentes posturas sobre el columpio acompañadas de la respiración adecuada es tan eficaz para tonificar y definir el cuerpo como para liberar la mente y sumergirse en la meditación.
El profesor de yoga, que es además artista plástico, reconoce que sus clases son “muy cañeras”, mientras que Natalia, que es también actriz de teatro, se ha especializado en los más pequeños, y es que el yoga aéreo es muy recomendable para que los niños hiperactivos focalicen su energía. Los alumnos por su parte aseguran que la práctica del yoga aéreo les ha ayudado a cambiar su filosofía de vida, y es que además de estar en forma, esta disciplina les asegura un buen rato, que, literalmente, se pasa volando.

Happier with this shot and edit, the previous shoot with Mat didn’t go so well as I didn’t have a direction for it to take, with this one I wanted to use my flash more advantageous than before so I tried out a few different setups by placing the flash infront of Mat to light his body with a reflector to brighten the off side. I was happy with the previous location so decided not to try elsewhere.
I decided to settle on an image that was back-lit and included a reflector to the left of the camera to bounce some light onto the front of his body.
Starting to enjoy strobist photography a lot at the moment, it’s not an area that I’m overly confident on but playing around with it can only help out my knowledge even it doesn’t produce some of my best work.
